Patient from kathryn wilson on Vimeo.

Dr. Maruyama from Kathryn Wilson on Vimeo.

Combined, these films make up "Scissiparity", a scientific term describing reproduction by fission. This is a process consisting of gradual division into two parts, each of which then becomes a separate and independent organism. The story is of a pair of lovers split in two, now existing in their separate realities yet seeking the other in their own way.

Part I. A woman with amnesia searches for something of great importance, yet she is unaware of what it might be.

Part II. When Dr. Maruyama discovers that his past lover still exists he is determined to find a way to reach her and spend eternity together. He creates an elixir of immortality which he injects in himself and takes other half with him on his journey to find her.

But will he?

I am currently working on the soundtrack, a process which is totally new to me, with my baby who knows a thing or two about that.

Some shots to continue the string of floating images.

Perception Dictates Capability

My latest installation consists of three separate pieces which all bring up the idea of expanding beyond perceived limitations while recognizing the impossibility of perfection.

Last night I had a dream

There are four girls, 7 or 8 years old, who murdered someone. It's unclear why or how, or whether the victim was young or old. The four girls are hiding out in an abandoned house, safe for the moment, interacting in a somewhat normal manner despite the heavy tension that lies over them all. Many hours, possibly days later we hear cars and voices outside. The girls realize there is no escape. They huddle together in the middle of the room, holding on to one another as tight as they can. We hear their thoughts, they hope with all their little hearts to be shot instantly when they are found. They know it's bad, they know it's really bad and all that lay ahead is suffering.

Monica Zeringue

Works by Monica Zeringue, an adjunct at UNO where I will be starting the MFA program this fall. Her works instantly grasped my attention with their detailed and minimal rendering and an impending sense of time. They have a peaceful atmosphere of waiting, restructuring and growth.

"The girls exist in a world devoid of any reference to time or location, as in a partially recalled dream or memory...They split apart, merge, and rearrange as a way of exploring identity and change. The work is about “becoming” something new, something solid and strong...the girls are stacked on top of each other, creating new structures, becoming something different. They remain unaware of each other, and maybe even themselves. The almost patterned repetition of poses emphasizes a “stuck” feeling, a sort of glitch in time. Yet their hair keeps growing. In fact, the hair has many functions. It connects the girls to each other, shows growth, change and movement, and actually can become something new, while the girls seem to be stagnant, motionless structures."
